The Shimano Corvalus baitcasting reel is a modestly priced reel that doesnt compramise on features. It is a good performer and if you are on a budget would be an excellent purchase.
The reel has a variable break system (VBS) which is present in many other Shimano reels and means that casting is hassle free with plenty of distance. It also has a one-way roller bearing as part of shimano's "Super Stopper" system which eliminates all backplay for solid hooksets. The drag system also works well and performs better than most in a similar price range. The sideplates can be removed easily by removing the secure thumbscrews which means maintenance and adjustments can be done on the fly.
The 400 and 401 size reels also give you a line out clicker for trolling or bait fishing, however it can be a quite fiddly to disengage as it is a little on the small side, and can cause problems when doing so with a fish on the end!
For a cheap reel, the Shimano Corvalus is a good performer though if you are willing to spend a little more you can get a reel with more features. It would also make a superb spare or second reel if you require one.
